Do You Suffer From Excessive Sweating? We Can Help

Excessive Sweating, hyperhidrosis, findlay med spa

Excessive sweating is a difficult condition to endure. Also known as hyperhidrosis, this type of sweating is much more than just perspiration that comes from physical exertion or high temperatures. Excessive sweating of this nature can hit you out of the blue in completely cool, calm social situations, causing embarrassment and discomfort.

Hyperhidrosis affects more than 15 million people in the United States -- nearly 5% of the population. But only half of patients with hyperhidrosis tell their doctors. Whether they’re embarrassed or thinking they just need to live with it, a good number of people are simply suffering in silence.

Many sufferers deal with their excessive sweating by keeping a towel nearby or a spare deodorant in their satchel or purse. Prior to recent developments in treatment, people with hyperhidrosis were left to their own devices. Over-the-counter antiperspirants were successful in some cases and not so much in others. Today, many people are able to control their hyperhidrosis through minimally invasive medical procedures.

Here at Findlay MedSpa, patients have success and relief using our treatments for combating excessive sweating. Read on to learn more.

The causes of hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating can be a symptom of an underlying medical cause, so it’s imperative to address your excessive perspiration with your physician. Heavy perspiration can also be a side effect of many medications, so consult your pharmacist as well. If there is no known medical reason for your excessive sweating, your condition will be diagnosed as primary hyperhidrosis.

Heredity plays a significant role in hyperhidrosis. If one of your parents was a given to heavy perspiration, then you’re a likely candidate to inherit the condition. Physiologically, what occurs when you begin to produce excessive sweat? The nerves that trigger your sweat glands become overactive, causing heavy perspiration, even when you’re at room temperature and not physically active.

Of course, there are the usual triggers that can set your sweat glands to high. These include stress, overexertion, and being in a warm environment. While most people will perspire under these conditions, someone with hyperhidrosis is unable to shut off the faucet. That’s why you find yourself perspiring excessively when you’re about to give a presentation or in certain social situations, like first dates. Talk about a romance ruiner!

Treatments for your excessive sweating

One of the most promising treatments for hyperhidrosis is laser ablation. This minimally invasive procedure targets, and shuts down, the overactive sweat glands, typically in the armpits and groin area. Their ability to produce sweat is compromised, resulting in far less perspiration. We use the PrecisionTxⓇ laser by CynosureⓇ for ablation of sweat glands. It requires just a local anesthetic and has little to no downtime afterwards.

Another proven treatment for hyperhidrosis is botulinum toxin (BotoxⓇ). Through this technique your sweat glands are paralyzed temporarily. The one drawback to Botox treatment is that it must be repeated as results wear off. Laser ablation is much more thorough, although individual results depend on the severity of your condition, and will vary.

The complications of excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis can lead to much more than a mounting pile of laundry. Your excessive sweating can make you more prone to body odor, skin infections, and rashes, as well as fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot.

Another complication is the toll excessive sweating can take on you emotionally. Many people learn to avoid the embarrassment of excessive sweating by isolating themselves from social opportunities, and this can lead to depression. Professional opportunities are also missed due to the embarrassment of hyperhidrosis.
